Our Journey

Established on 12 August 1992 at Kompleks Dayabumi, GALERI PETRONAS was founded in line with PETRONAS’ commitment to promoting, developing and preserving Malaysian contemporary art. 

01 The Foundation

Our journey established on 1992 at Kompleks Dayabumi with a landmark exhibition to celebrate the bilateral friendship between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China. It marked our first step towards an enduring aspiration: to bring world-class art to the Malaysian public and foster regional collaborations across Southeast Asia.

02 The Precedence

In the years that followed, we established our role within Malaysia’s art landscape — building our collection, shaping our curatorial direction, and presenting exhibitions that connect artists and audiences.

03 The Defining Presence

Our relocation to Suria KLCC in 1998 marked a defining moment in our journey. Situated on Level 3, the new space featured a 22,000 sqm purpose-designed gallery — nearly three times larger than our original home. The move significantly elevated our presence, enabling us to present both Malaysian and international contemporary art to visitors within 
one of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic landmarks.

04 The Silent Growth

After 28 years, we took some time away from the public eye to reimagine our direction and future. Even as we paused for a quiet phase of reflection, our space remained active through cultural and corporate showcases, while behind the scenes, we continued to care for and grow our collection — laying the groundwork for what was to come.

05 The Rejuvenation

In 2026, we marked another new chapter within Kuala Lumpur's latest icon, Ombak KLCC. Our new home is a dynamic space for artistic innovation, regional dialogue and broader public engagement, offering an experiential visitor journey — an encounter with art designed to connect, inspire and captivate.
